This is my first post on this website. I previously wrote film reviews for my school newspaper and found it interesting to write down my opinions on films. I recently graduated and started college and I haven't been writing so when I found Wix, I was glad that I can post opinions again. I watch almost any type of film and own over 600! I felt that it'd be best if I review one of my favorite films first, which is Love Actually.
Love Actually is a film composed of 10 different stories that are connected in some way all taking place in the weeks leading up to Christmas. All of the stories have something to do with love as you could have guessed from the title. Normally these types of films don't hold up. There is too much going on and too many characters to follow. However, this film works. You care about the characters and the main stories are interesting. All of the leads are likeable. Even Bill Nighy's Billy Mack character who insults his own manager and friend. The film is pretty realistic when portraying love in general. There are times when it is the best feeling in the world and times when it can feel like the absolute worst. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't as portrayed in the film. Almost everyone learns that in their life. It sucks but it is inevitable. Even during the film's more serious moments, I found myself smiling, remembering the warmth that love used to feel. The characters are all very realistic in portraying emotions of happiness, hurt, love, and lost amongst others.
Released in 2003 as a romantic comedy, one would expect the film to be just another generic rom-com, but it's far from it. Sure it's chockful of clichés but it's smart script and likable cast make up for it. Some stories aren't as focused as others such as Colin and his trip to America to meet girls. But they are still good and they don't steer the story away. It's a great film to watch whether or not it's Christmas and it's a great film to watch alone or with a loved one.
