Chris Evans joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Captain America. He is joined by Hayley Atwell who plays Agent Peggy Carter, Hugo Weaving as Red Skull, Tommy Lee Jones as Colonel Chester Phillips, Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark (Tony Stark's father), Toby Jones as Armin Zola, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. As you can see the film boasts an amazing cast for the origin film of one of the most recognizable superheroes out there.
It is 1942, America has entered World War II, and sickly but determined Steve Rogers is frustrated at being rejected yet again for military service. Everything changes when Dr. Erskine recruits him for the secret Project Rebirth. Proving his extraordinary courage, wits and conscience, Rogers undergoes the experiment and his weak body is suddenly enhanced into the maximum human potential. When Dr. Erskine is then immediately assassinated by an agent of Nazi Germany's secret HYDRA research department (headed by Johann Schmidt, a.k.a. the Red Skull), Rogers is left as a unique man who is initially misused as a propaganda mascot; however, when his comrades need him, Rogers goes on a successful adventure that truly makes him Captain America, and his war against Schmidt begins.
With Captain America the First Avenger, Marvel closes out origin stories in Phase 1 of the MCU. With an amazing cast ad an awesome hero, you'd expect The First Avenger to be amazing. Sadly it falls short. Watching this makes you wonder if Evans was chosen as Captain America for more than just his looks. Hayley Atwell is fantastic as Agent Carter. It is absolutely no wonder why Carter got her own show. Hugo Weaving plays Red Skull very terrifyingly. Hopefully we get to see more of him down the road seeing as how as of this date Marvel has extended its release dates through 2020.
